More Modern War Testing
Since my last post on the topic more play testing has taken place with our Modern War system, becoming known as Flashpoint. We’ve sorted the main rules and have a demo scenario that works quite well. So last night I continued updating the rulebook – fluffing it out and making it more readable.
It’s also now time to add in more cool stuff, like light vehicles, more scenarios, unique tactics and Russians! I don’t think it will be long now until there’s a testing version available to download for a select few ;).
New MiniPainters.com Work
Work is well under way on the relaunch of MiniPainters. It’s been a good couple of years or so since MiniPainters was flying as an online miniatures community but sadly it slipped away.
Finally however, the relaunch is on the horizon. With a sleek new design and many exciting features MiniPainters is about to be back with a bang! This time around the focus is shifting to be an article driven site, providing top quality painting and modelling articles by our team and the community.
There’s loads of things to talk about but the best thing is probably for me to get back onto the site ;) so I’ll post more details at a later date!
FPS Woes
On friday I found a new free online FPS (First Person Shooter) game for the PC which looked quite good, so I decided to go ahead and download it and see what it was like. Oh what fun!
First I struggled to actually download it. Their website was slow and temperamental. The downloader once it got it working was the same too, downloaded half of it and stopped. Finally finished off the download yesterday, only to install, launch the game, and it can’t connect to the server! Tried again today and the same thing happened. So back to the website I go – without realising I had downloaded the Korean version of the game!
OK I’m willing to accept myself being a noob and downloading from the wrong site (it could be a bit clearer though!). The European site was all good, fast download and away I went. Great I thought, I’ll finally be able to give it a try.
No.
Apparently it can’t run because of some corrupt file, and looking at their FAQ it’s a known problem that they are trying to fix. I get as far as logging in and there’s a problem “they’re trying to fix”??
So, after all this, my original idea was to do a bit of a review of the game – but I can’t. So it’ll have to be a 0/10 unless I finally get to play it!
White Dwarf 353 Review
The new issue of White Dwarf magazine was delivered to me yesterday so I thought I’d do a bit of a review. Being a subscriber and a long time hobbyist I tend to review them in my head every month anyway. I’ll probably start doing a few reviews of various things – magazines, games, CDs etc.
This issue sees the release of the new Imperial Guard codex for Warhammer 40,000. As you can imagine due to this there is a lot of stuff inside for the Guard, including a massive battle report. Lots of nice shiny new miniatures, but not being a Guard fan it doesn’t tickle my fancy all that much.
There’s also a small section on the new War of the Ring. I’ve noticed lately that Lord of the Rings has gotten less coverage in the magazine, however this month – while still being small, it seems to have been given a few extra pages.
The star of the show though has to be a painting masterclass article by ‘Eavy Metal painter Joe Tomaszewski, who happens to also be and old friend of mine. In the article he describes how he painted the new Games Day Chaos Lord model, and the result is fantastic. It’s nice to see a long painting article too, this baby gets 7 pages, including a page on the theory behind NMM. Anybody who likes their painting should definately give it a read.
All in all I’d have to give it a 7/10, mainly based on the quality painting article.
Possibly the funniest video I’ve ever seen
Tonight, during the normal beer drinking, computer gaming, random internet surfing nights between myself and a friend of mine, we came across this video and couldn’t stop laughing for about 20 minutes.
I can’t believe someone drew and ASCII roflcopter! And is it really sad that after all of the laughter I think to myself how well made the video actually is?
